The New York City Story

More Than a City.
A Place of Possibility.

New York City has long represented possibility: the possibility of becoming known, building a chosen family, finding community, and living with greater authenticity. Generations of LGBTQIA+ people have come to New York City from across the United States and around the world, contributing to its neighborhoods, businesses, artistic movements, cultural institutions, political organizations, and unmistakable energy.

The LGBTQIA+ history of New York City cannot be contained within one street or neighborhood. It can be found in the gathering places of Greenwich Village, the cultural legacy of Harlem, the performance spaces of Midtown, the waterfront and brownstone communities of Brooklyn, and the international neighborhoods of Queens.

Today, New York City remains one of the world’s most visible centers of LGBTQIA+ life. Residents and visitors can discover inclusive restaurants, hotels, pharmacies, medical professionals, attorneys, real estate professionals, retailers, nightlife destinations, nonprofit organizations, and neighborhood businesses throughout the five boroughs.

1969

Stonewall and the Power of Collective Courage

Christopher Street · Greenwich Village

In the early hours of June 28, 1969, a police raid at the Stonewall Inn was met with spontaneous resistance. The uprising continued in the surrounding streets of Greenwich Village over several nights and became a defining milestone in the modern movement for LGBTQIA+ civil rights.

Stonewall did not create LGBTQIA+ resistance, advocacy, or community. New York City already had organizers, publications, gathering places, artists, and groups challenging discrimination before 1969. What Stonewall provided was extraordinary momentum: a public symbol of people refusing invisibility and demanding the freedom to live openly, organize, speak, gather, and belong.

The first anniversary of the uprising helped inspire the Christopher Street Liberation Day March in New York City in 1970, an event widely recognized as an important predecessor of modern Pride marches. From those streets, the movement reached cities across the United States and eventually around the world.
