Creating safe spaces for transgender individuals by honoring “Transgender Day of Remembrance”
Today, we honor Transgender individuals and creating safe spaces to honor the lives of transgender individuals. Today we honor the lives tragically lost to violence, hatred, and discrimination. Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR) is a solemn day that calls upon all of us to reflect on the impact of transphobia and commit to creating a safer, more inclusive world.
The Origin of TDOR
Transgender Day of Remembrance was founded in 1999 by Gwendolyn Ann Smith to honor the memory of Rita Hester, a transgender woman murdered in 1998. Since then, it has grown into a global observance, with vigils, ceremonies, and actions held to commemorate lives lost and bring awareness to the ongoing violence faced by the transgender community.
Why TDOR Matters
Transgender individuals, particularly trans women of color, continue to face disproportionate levels of violence and discrimination. TDOR is not only a time to remember those lost but also a moment to amplify voices, highlight systemic inequalities, and advocate for real change.
Standing Together
The fight for trans rights is far from over, but progress is possible when we work together. Allies play a vital role in this journey—whether through advocating for policy changes, supporting trans-led organizations, or simply standing up against hate in everyday life.
