I am an Abstract Expressionist painter from the diverse land of Guyana, located in South America, where flora and fauna abound and the land merits the name, "A Naturist Paradise." I am from a family of eleven siblings, whose union in marriage mimics the populace of my mother land - a true, multicultural society. I was born on 13th September, in the capital city of Georgetown where one of the worlds' tallest wooden buildings, St. Georges Cathedral, stands. I spent most of my early years in different regions of Guyana, because of the various senior Government positions my Dad held. My first three years was spent in the bauxite mining town of Linden and then in Skeldon, Berbice where rice farms and mills coveted large expanses of the landscape. I attended All Saints primary school and, Berbice High school in the town of New Amsterdam. However, I returned to Georgetown to complete my secondary school education at Queens College; attended the Burrowes School of Art and earned a degree in Fine Arts from the University of Guyana. I completed my degree in 2000, earning a distinction and returned after graduating as a Lecturer in Painting, Graphic Arts, Ceramics and Textile designing. At the University I organized exhibitions, textile designing workshops, and took students on tours, including the Faculty of Creative Arts annual pilgrimage tour to Tougaloo College Art Colony in Mississippi, for workshops and exhibitions. My birth city, Georgetown holds many memories including serving in many Church positions and my participation as a volunteer for Youth Challenge International and Canadian Crossroads International Organizations; and Dorado Speed Swim club where I competed regionally and internationally, as well as, worked as an assistant Swim Instructor.
ARTISTIC STATEMENT: Painting has always been a creative mode of expression that has allowed me to record my inner feelings, impressions, and life experiences. I was influenced by Artists such as Paul Cezanne, the French Impressionists namely Claude Monet, and Expressionist painters Pablo Picasso and Vincent Van Gogh. As well as Guyanese artists Philip Moore, George Simon, Dr. Doris Rogers and Bernadette Persaud. My paintings reflect my interests in the Graphic arts, and Design. My inspiration comes from my everyday life experiences, my inner feelings and impressions, music, Religion and my Spiritual connections to things sacred. I love being creative and artistically expressive using simplified forms, a limited palette and lines - many varied and different kind of lines . My desire is to express through my paintings our innate spiritual connections that unites us all as benevolent and compassionate beings. My hope is that whatever I see in my Minds' Eye, and feel in my heart I will be able to authentically transfer onto my canvases. And my dream is to bring to light the endless possibilities of how works of art can help us see new perspectives about life and the value of creative expression.
